A chilled water unit (also called a chiller) is an indirect expansion cooling system. This means it uses an intermediate fluid to transfer “cold” to the emitters. There is no refrigerant circulating through the system: in the case of a chilled water unit, water (pure or glycolated) serves as the intermediary fluid, used here as the heat transfer fluid.
This cooling solution is suitable for both industrial process cooling and residential air conditioning applications.
