Applications include the production of drinking water (including from seawater), boiler feed water for steam boilers, and the purification of certain wastewater and slurry.

Reverse osmosis is a process for demineralizing water by applying pressure to a membrane. Previously, this was done with ion exchangers or distillation. An alternative or post-treatment method is electrodialysis.
